We welcome disabled children
Many of our day care centres also care for disabled children. Their personalities, their creativity and their sensitivity all enrich life at the day care centres. When disabled children and non-disabled children get together, something good comes out of it for both sides.
Children with disabilities are still children like any others. Children who are curious about their surroundings and want to learn everything they can about them. Children who need contact with other children to stimulate the development of their own abilities.
Disabled children need special, qualified nurturing and care. The care given by our highly-trained educators must be supplemented - in the case of a disabled child - by therapy and medical and psychological counselling, tailored to the individual needs of that child.
At many day care centres there are places specially reserved for disabled children. Some of these places are in groups of mixed children - disabled and non-disabled - and some of them are in groups of only disabled children. These day care centres are better equipped for disabled children in terms of the staff and have, in addition, specialist therapists, particularly physiotherapists or speech therapists. A group of experienced paediatricians and psychologists of the 'Vereinigung' is on hand to advise staff at the day care centres.
To get a place for a disabled child at a day care centre, you have to get a report written by an expert from the Youth Psychiatric Service ["Jugendpsychiatrische Dienst"] housed at the Health Office [Gesundheitsamt] in your local District Office (Bezirksamt) or the Counselling Centre for The Disabled ["Beratungsstelle für Behinderte"] on Eppendorfer Landstraße confirming that your child is disabled.
